Unilag To Re-Instate Unionism

The authority of University of Lagos has reiterated its commitment to reinstate unionism in the campus, several years after it was banned. Campus Square learnt that student union election will hold in the next academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Tolu Odugbemi, promised to prevent miscreants from taking control of the students' political climate.

To ensure that credible candidates will represent the students in the forthcoming election, the V.C said there would be departmental, faculty and hall associations, from which members of the union will be drawn.

Students have praised the authorities for the move to reinstate the banned University of Lagos Students Union (ULSU) after several years of not having representatives.

Speaking with Campus Square, a 300 level Political Science student, Abdul Karim Sheu, said it is a good idea.

Abdul Karim, who was part of the committee that reviewed the students’ constitution, said it is clearly stated that anybody that is contesting should note that it is a milestone in his or her career.

Another student who does not want his name in print said re-instating USLU will be a blessing for the students and the school, noting that most of the students that participated in the crisis that led to its ban were no more in school.

He urged students to look for contestants with proven integrity, worthy personality and impeccable character. He also advised the contestants to always go by the three ‘Cs’, which are, "consultation and confirmation. The last one, confrontation should be carefully handled".

The University of Lagos Students Union (ULSU) was banned in January, 2005 during the administration of Prof. Ibidapo Obe when the students protested the death of Honourable Laolu Akosile, a final year student of law and speaker of the Students Union.
