Don Decries Nigeria's Lack Of Database

A senior lecturer with the University of Nigeria, Dr. Gertrude-Theresa Chiaha, has presented a case for the creation of a data bank, using information and communication technology in Nigeria.

Dr. Chiaha, who was a guest lecture at the fourth graduation ceremony of Information Technology Business School in Lagos recently, described as disheartening the absence of data banks, where prospective students of higher institutions seeking to study particular courses, can access information about them online.

He also decried scarcity of well groomed instructors and lecturers for information and communication technology in universities and other institutions in the country, adding that this accounts for the low quality of graduates, most of who did not have the opportunity of operating the computer while in school.

According to Dr. Chiaha, it is worrisome that “if you want to take a course in Nigeria, you would find it difficult to get the actual number of institutions handling the course online.”

She claimed that the opportunity of ICT is not made available to schools. “Getting the professionals to teach it is not easy because the lecturers who were supposed to teach the students do not even have the knowledge.

“So, most students graduate without such knowledge and this makes it important for them to study it outside the universities.”

The university don said that the introduction of ICT has helped to improve various businesses in the world.

According to her, it is commonly believed that ICT has permeated every aspect of life, especially the world of commerce, adding that it is knowledge management that has made the world a global village

“Many researchers would not want to post their work on the internet for reasons best known to them. This will not help development in Nigeria. The beauty of ICT is in knowledge sharing. In other words, there can be no effective ICT without knowledge management.

In his speech, the proprietor of the institution and Managing Director of ITBS Group, Engineer Babatunde Ezekiel, urged the students to make adequate use of the knowledge they have acquired from the institution.

Though the labour market is saturated, he said he was sure the services of the graduating students would be sought since professionals in ICT are few in the country.
