The Deputy-Vice Chancellor, (Administration), University of Benin, Professor John Okhuoya has described the conduct of Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) by Universities as a result of decadence in the country’s educational system.
In a chat with Campus Square at the just concluded University of Benin Alumni Association (UBAA) awards night held in Lagos State, Prof. Okhuoya said universities didn’t deliberately introduce Post-UME, stressing that they started conducting the screening when they discovered that students gaining admission to higher institutions through JAMB were involved in various forms of examination malpractices.
According to the renowned Professor of Mycology: “To put an end to the cases of examination malpractice, we decided to start entrance examination and I am saying authoritatively that most of the people that scored high scores in JAMB don’t perform very well in the entrance examination”.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor said the lawmakers that called for the scrapping of Post-UTME are not sincere to Nigerians, calling them to address the problems affecting the educational system holistically.
“We need to be sincere with Nigerians. The problem with educational standard in this country is not about Post-UTME. The system needs to be sanitised,” Prof. Okhuoya stated.
He faulted the structure of education at the primary and secondary schools level, saying that if the foundation of any building is weak, the house will sink.
