Govt'll Meet Demands Of AOCOED Staff

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State , Princess Sarah Adebisi Sosan, has promised that the Lagos State Government led by Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola would accede to all the legitimate demands of the staff of Adeniran Ogunsanya
College of Education (AOCOED), Otto/Ijanikin, Lagos State.

Princess Sosan made the promise when the Governing Council of the college, led by its chairperson, Mrs. Victoria Adedamola Akran, paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor who also oversees the State Education Ministry.

She said that a letter containing the demands of the staff union had reached the state government and is already receiving urgent attention at the appropriate quarters.

She however urged the entire workforce to remain calm, adding that the demands from the college through its provost, Mr. Hakeem Ajose-Adeogun, was being handled expeditiously.

The Deputy Governor assured the college Governing Council and its management of the state government's  support, promising that as an alumnus of the college she is prepared to be at the fore-front of all developmental efforts being put in place to assist the institution gain more relevance in the education sector.

In her speech, the AOCOED Governing Council Chairperson disclosed that her team had mapped out strategies to position the college as a foremost teacher trainer institution not only in Nigeria but also in the world, adding that the quality of teaching and learning was already being overhauled.

“The current focus and thinking in the college is the desire to change the quality of teaching and learning in the schools in the state by changing the quality of teaching and learning in AOCOED,” she said.

She further described AOCOED as “the root, the source, the genesis, the foundation, the fountain and the beginning of teacher education delivery in the state ” and “the primary manufacturer and indeed the main supplier of teachers for the state’s school system”.

Mrs. Akran remarked that the easiest way to strategically change the complexion and texture of education in the state is to vigorously enhance the quality of teaching and learning and that AOCOED is already doing so.

Motivated by the time-tested dictum that “no country can rise above the quality of its teaching manpower”, she said her council was motivated  to revamp AOCOED such that it can better produce teachers with the requisite wherewithal to lift the education system in the state to a new and an enviable height.

Mrs. Akran solicited more robust funding support from the state government because all efforts need be mustered to ensure total transformation of the facilities of the college that had been poorly funded over the past 50 years of its existence.

The AOCOED council boss also promised that her team is embarking on a drastic overhaul of the content and style of teaching and learning in the college, adding that the ICT Centre under construction in the college would facilitate the new thinking in comprehensive curriculum overhaul.

She said her council would liaise with all relevant agencies to achieve the mandate given to it by the Lagos State Governor during the inauguration of the council about three months ago.
