Implementation Of Tve Enhance Job Opportunity – Prof. Fetuga

Successful implementation of Technical and Vocational Education training has been identified as one of the ways of enhancing employment opportunity in the country.

This statement was made by the former Dean, School of Post-Graduate Studies, University of Ibadan, Professor B A Fetuga, while delivering a lecture on the topic Empowering Future Generation of Youths for Self-Reliance at the 16th Convocation lecture organised by Lagos State Polytechnic.

The lecture was held at the Engineering Lecture Theatre, Ikorodu Campus, Lagos.

According to Prof. Fetuga, implementing the technical and vocational training will further stimulate sustainable national development, improve the quality of life, limit the incidence of social unrest due to unemployment and prepare the individual for self employment and possibly to become a job creator.

Professor Fetuga said, though, several commissions and study group have long recognised the value of technical and vocational education as a means to tackle unemployment, but in Nigeria, TVE remains largely under developed and no more emphasis has been placed on it.

The former Dean of School of Post Graduate studies, therefore, said Nigerian economy cannot move forward unless the issue of technical and vocational education is placed squarely on the front burner, x-rayed and adjusted as appropriate to meet the countries needs.

He finally said TVE could become a veritable tool in targeted income generation activity if effectively organized and properly founded, adding that it will also create jobs for the youth especially now that all the graduates of our tertiary institutions are job seekers and not job creators.

Prof. Fetuga urged Nigerian government to create a multiplicity of entrepreneurial development programmes for young fresh graduates and other school leavers.
