Considering the controversies generated by the failed attempt of a Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to bomb a United States aircraft on Christmas day, an Islamic Scholar, Imam Mamood Moshood, has buttressed the reason why parents and guardians need to give their wards close monitoring in school.
Mamood, who blamed the incident on the negligence of Abdulmutallab's parents and relatives, said no matter what, giving one’s child the needed attention goes a long way in shaping his future.
According to him, “any child that does not have a good parental monitoring will end up keeping bad friends. It takes only the grace of God for such child not to be wayward, and that is why we always emphasise in our preaching that parents should pay more attention to their children.
“Like I always say, cultism, prostitution and other social vices are very rampant in Nigerian tertiary institutions because once these children get admission, most parents think they’ve grown enough to take care of themselves. But it is not supposed to be so. Parents should endeavour to check their children in school regularly, not only to know their academic performance, but to also get to know the kind of friends they keep.”
