The over five month-old Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike in universities in southeast Nigeria has led to the removal of Prof. Chukwuneye Anene, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Anambra State University, ANSU.
Prof. Anene was removed from office by the State Government, while Prof. Fidelis Okafor has been appointed to take charge of the vacant seat.
Prof. Okafor's appointment was announced in a radio/television broadcast by the state governor, Mr. Peter Obi. Okafor was formerly the provost of the state-owned Nwafor Orizu College of Education (NOCAE),Nsugbe Anambra State.
Obi explained that the change of baton was necessary to restore normalcy to the activities in the university, having earlier reconstituted the Governing Council of the university on 15 December 2010.
He added that to ensure that the new governing council effectively carries out its functions, there is need to change the leadership of the university
