Higher National Diploma, HND, student of Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH, Ikorodu campus, Miss Adenike Ashogbon, alongside her partner Tosin Makinde from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akangba-Akoko Ondo State have jointly won the 2009/10 Young Journalist of the Year.
The duo were pronounced winners of the prestigious award during the 4th edition of Young Journalist Awards Nigeria organised by Media Career Services. The event was held recently at the Conference Hall, Journalists Against AIDS, Ogba, Lagos State.
Speaking with Campus Square after she was presented with a plaque of recognition and a laptop, the Mass Communication student of LASPOTECH thanked God for the honour. “I feel great and honoured. Despite the fact that we (including Tosin) worked for it, we were not expecting it because we thought it was going to be a very tight competition,” she said.
Miss Ashogbon dedicated the award to the Sunday Editor, The Nation Newspaper, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin and Tosin Makinde. Ashogbon and Makinde had jointly wrote the article, Lost in Paradise, which won them the prestigious award.
Mrs. Ifeoma Osaka Nwando from Voice of Nigeria emerged first runner-up while Soyombo Olufisayo, a graduate of Animal Science from University of Ibadan won the student category.
In a chat with Campus Square, the President of Media Career Services, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, said the award was meant to provide an avenue for young journalists to be identified, inspired and be aware of many possibilities in the profession.
He promised to expand the organisation of the awards to allow young journalists from all over Nigeria to participate.
At the end of the event which had in attendance past winners of the Young Journalists Awards, University of Ibadan Campulse magazine and Heart Beat newspaper; Moshood Abiola Polytechnic’s Corporate Mirror Magazine and Community Echo newspaper were also recognised for their contribution to campus journalism.
