Lagos To Stop Mass Failure In SSCE — Sosan

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Sosan has reiterated government’s determination to find a lasting solution to the problem of mass failure of students in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Sosan stated this at the commissioning of a new building and ultra modern equipment at Lagos State Educational Resource Centre (LASERC), Ojodu, Lagos, South West Nigeria.

She stated that the state would soon start enjoying the gains of the centre through the performance of students in their examinations, especially in the SSCE.

The deputy governor said that it was to realise the above fact that facilitated the huge investment of equipping the centre with the ultra modern equipment that would complement teaching in the state, and thus upgrade the standard of education in Lagos State.

“The only way teachers can improve and impact positively  on students is through teaching with the use of instructional materials. This would among other things assist students to have easy grasp of subjects and further enhance their retentive memory.

“Teachers in both primary and secondary schools in the state should ensure they go to the centre to learn and develop themselves on how to produce and utilize various instructional materials that would further assist them in teaching various subjects in their schools,” she stated.

Sosan commended the Director of the LASERC, Mrs. Sidikatu Abiola, for her sense of dedication, commitment and fulfilment in making the dream of completing the construction of the new building a reality and therefore enjoined others to emulate her.

In her address, Abiola, explained that as far as the planning, implementation and completion of the new building was concerned, Governor Fashola, Sosan and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Omolara Erogbogbo should be praised for their determination in taking education in Lagos State to an enviable standard.

According to her, the centre was closed down for almost five years but was resuscitated after her appointment as a director, and that the centre formerly known as Educational Technology Section was changed to Education Resource Centre with the approval of the present administration in February 2008.

The new building is equipped to offer an array of services, including designing and production of instructional materials; capacity building of teachers on production and utilization of teaching materials; mobile workshop for rural and riverine areas; printing of instructional posters, charts, letter heads, file jackets, mini audio and video recording and language laboratory for learning English, French and other languages.
