The Chancellor of Rhema University, Abia State, Nigeria, Reverend Emmanuel Okorie, has said that the only way to curb cultism and examination malpractices in the nation’s tertiary institutions was to adopt a means of reforming culprits rather than resorting to punitive measures.
He was optimistic that cultism could be curbed in tertiary institutions if the students involved could be reformed rather than expelling them, thereby making them to be problems to their parents.
Okorie observed that the standard of education was falling gradually, saying he had to get the license from the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) to establish a tertiary institution that would make a difference.
“I want to see a transformed Nigeria in my life time. It is possible. We can do it. It would be easier to do so through proper education and training of our people,” he stated at the unveiling of the university in Lagos, Nigeria, saying that Rhema University would set a standard for others and urged parents to enrol their wards in the institution that would take off next month.
Pro-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Ogwo Egoma Ogwo, said the missing link between academic pursuits at the expense of character building on individuals was partly responsible for the societal vices of kidnapping, corruption, fraud and other social maladies that had befallen the nation.
According to him, despite the high calibre of professionals produced in the country, the nation was still saddled with the problem of under development, saying that the trend must be checked to give the younger generation hope of a brighter rewarding future.
“This is exactly what informed the establishment of Rhema University, a private university in Abia State, borne out of the desire of the owner, the Living Word Ministries, to establish a first class tertiary institution that will promote academic excellence, the dignity of man and moral rectitude, among the beneficiaries,” he said.
Ogwo stated that the philosophy of the citadel of learning was founded on the need to acquire sound knowledge aimed at fashioning a better future for the youths, adding that what was needed in the country to be recognised among the comity of nations was knowledge.
He further said that entrepreneurial skills would be taught to students in the new institution which would take off with two faculties, calling on prospective students to enrol in the institution, as Rhema would charge the lowest fees to be offered by any private institution in the country.
