Varsity Reassures Students

Swiss Management Centre (SMC), a private distance learning university with learning centres in Zurich and Vienna, has reassured students of academic excellence.

The international university has drawn up impressive guidelines aimed at bridging the gap between theories and practical knowledge in the business world that will enable students to pursue fantastic careers in economic research, business administration, management and leadership.

The program covers the three levels of study: Bachelor, Master and Doctorate Degrees. Besides the PhD in Economics, SMC University also offers the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). Its high quality degree programs are based on an academic philosophy that promote high standard of education, setting the pace for traditional universities.

The Chairman of the university, Michael Schmelczer, stated that the institution offers programmes that will meet the students’ educational requirements and expectations.

“The smooth relationship between professors and their students is geared towards stimulating the students' analytical skills, critical thinking skills as well as developing their affinity for debating,” he said.

Mr. Schmelczer explained that the university authorities attach great importance to the development of social competence, ethical codes of conduct, and a sense of responsibility in its degree programs.

“SMC University commits itself to impacting knowledge based on relevance and cutting-edge didactic technologies to students. The university’s close relations with the business world ensure a strong practical orientation,” he added.

According to him, “we are very proud of our position in what is probably the most widely known ranking of MBA programs worldwide. Ever since the establishment of our institution, instead of fighting common prejudices, we have been working hard on refining the quality of our academic programmes. We were able to engage some of the most prestigious international economists and social philosophers.”

The Chairman further stated that SMC University voluntarily complies with the Bologna declaration and the educational directives adopted by the European Council in 2000 in Nice. Even though the time schedule for completing a degree program at SMC University is very flexible, the academic degrees awarded by SMC University are internationally accredited.

Explaining the difference between the DBA and the MBA programs, he said: “The DBA degree is less generalised than the MBA. It is designed for experienced managers with a proven performance record, wishing to specialise in a particular area of interest. Without the need for research in the classical sense, the students directly use their wealth of practical experience to prepare their dissertation. The DBA programme has turned out to be a great success for SMC University. Currently, there are significantly more students taking the DBA program than the MBA program.

"At SMC University’s Belvedere Campus in Vienna, the students are supported by the same professors as on the distance learning platform. A comprehensive online library grants access to a vast number of books and academic studies, while over a thousand books are available in the university’s physical library. "

The Chairman noted that the cross-cultural understanding is a cornerstone of the learning model, which aspires to develop intellectual skills, while at the same time nurture emotional competence, as well as personal and systemic congruence.

The learning model’s purpose is to impact practical-oriented knowledge with critical and analytical skills to student. The student council offers students the opportunity to represent their interests with regards to the institution and faculty, and supports students who have difficulties coping with the unfamiliar distance learning situation.
