Corps Members Sensitise Danfo Drivers On Hard Drugs

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)/ National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Community Development Service (CDS) group, Lagos State Chapter, has organized a one day sensitisation campaign at the Ojuelegba under-bridge, Lagos.

Speaking with Campus Square, the NYSC/NDLEA CDS president, Kehinde Komolafe, said the enlightenment programme is one of the series of programmes organised by the group to educate commuter drivers and their conductors on the danger of  hard drugs and alcohol.

According to Corper Komolafe, as a youth group, we observed that most of our commuter drivers and their conductors use hard drugs, even while on the highway. That was why we decided to stage the campaign here at Ojuelegba, adding that, “we will also look for ways to rehabilitate those who want to stop the habit”.

Corper Komolafe stated that the support they got from the Road Transport Union was encouraging, as they were provided with the materials needed for the programme.

The events began with a procession  and lectures on the negative effects of hard drugs and alcohol, were later  delivered by Corper Shakarho Udi Efeturi  (Delta State) and Corper Ogechukwu Okonkwo (Enugu State.). The two speakers condemned drugs and alcohol, stating that, “they are  dangerous to health and weaken the body system”.

Speaking at the event, the representative of the NDLEA, Lagos State Command, Mrs. Adekola Okunwolu, said the turn-out of participants was very impressive. She believed that the lecture will change  the lifestyle  of the drivers positively. She, therefore advised the corps members not to relent in their campaign, urging them to continue even after their service year.

The Chairman, Ajegunle Chapel, Ojuelegba Road Transport Employers Association, Mr. David Wilson Ajayi, commended the corps members for the campaign.

"The programme was meant for us and  that was why we accepted to support them because we believe it will really help our members.

“Today’s lecture is seen as the beginning , and after today, we will organise our members again and again, and give them lecture on the effects of hard drugs," he said.
